Arctic Marina
Our story

How Arctic Marina came to be

The lake demands attention, and that has not changed.

Haruto Kimura launched Arctic Marina in the spring of 2011 after spending several years watching vessels come and go from a makeshift gravel beach on the western shore of Lake Akan with nowhere proper to tie up. The nearest full-service yard was a four-hour drive south, and most boat owners in the Kushiro area were improvising: dragging vessels onto trailers, storing them in backyards, doing engine work on the ice in March. Colin had been working as a marine mechanic in Hay River and had saved enough to lease a strip of shoreline from the territorial government. He poured the first dock pilings in June 2011, working with a local welding contractor and a borrowed excavator.

Founder
Haruto Kimura grew up in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, and spent his early twenties crewing on supply barges along the Mackenzie River delta. He later worked as a marine mechanic at a commercial yard in Kushiro Port before moving north to establish Arctic Marina in 2011. He holds a Japan Coast Guard small-craft mechanic certification and a Pleasure Boat Operator license, and has spent fifteen years learning the particular demands of sub-Arctic waterways: freeze-up timing, ice-class hull requirements, and the short but intense open-water season. On slow mornings before the dock fills up, he reads whatever nautical history he can find about the Northwest Passage.
